the "KISS Principle" which says (among other things it implies) that a computer system and it's software should be no more complicated that what is absolutely necessary to carry out it's functionality correctly
the underlying assumption that simpler things have fewer (or no) inherent flaws and their flaws (if any) are more easily found and repaired than with more complicated things
